NCT DREAM - BOOM
cw: lens flares, supernatural elements (powers)

Flashback Friday to this song that always starts playing on the psychic radio in this household when it starts thundering outside. Which is not the most random association, but still kinda random. 🀣 Old enough to be part of when SM was still building NCT lore, but also NCT lore is maybe no longer relevant to anything? And also I'm still having FEELINGS that this is old enough to qualify for Flashback Friday oh lort cheesus.

CC in Chinese, English, Indonesian, Japanese, Spanish, and Thai

Two screenshots in a distressed rainbow-hued frame (top and bottom bar only, red to blue left to right gradient) with a black to light grey slash from upper left to bottom right, the phrase Midweek New Music Roundup atop the divider. Above the bar, a young Korean woman (Kim Yeji of KARDI) in a completely empty white space, most of her brown hair pulled up aside from two framing skinny braids, dressed in light button-up under a distressed bulky black sweater, gripping a corded microphone. Below the slash, four young Korean men (members of boy group P1Harmony) in casual clothes, shot from above and dancing on an array of brownish-hued Persian rugs. Center bottom text reads May 7-14.

Look, Thursday still counts as mid-week and it's still Thursday until I go to sleep, regardless of what the clock says, okay? Okay! πŸ˜†

This week the listing was a tiny bit more manageable and still covering a whole range of genres. We got two debuts this week - virtual group Priz and new girl group ablume - plus more comebacks than you can shake a stick at. In the mood to dance? Try the latest comebacks from E'LAST or MEOVV. Looking for more trot? Jeong Dongwon dropped another video, plus we got performances from two Handsome Trot artists. In the mood for something rock? There's dance rock from KARDI and CHUU, folk rock from Big Baby Driver and SoonSoonHee, soft rock from MRCH and Seoul Dabansa, or whatever Sons of Madam are doing this week. Seeking the freshest hiphop beats? Check out the latest from Loco, MOST, and JA!L. Need some R&B? Woody dropped a bunch of performances. Wanting a theraputic cry? Search out the hanky warnings. Not sure where to start? Browse the listing however you like or drop me a comment and I can try to steer you in a good direction.

Banner slots this week went to KARDI and P1Harmony, with my additional picks going to LUCY, SAAY, and Kwon Soonkwan with Bang Yedam, because I can be both surprising and predictable some weeks. πŸ˜‰

SORAN - Love Crash!
cw: surrealism, lens flares

Something a little different from what I usually post (rock instead of pop) while also being not all that different because this MV is also wonderfully stupid and crazy in the happiest way.

AXN - ON MY WAY
cw: flashing, lens flares, water glare

As an artist myself, the chaotic mess of art supplies all over feels so real. πŸ˜† And aww, what a cute pupper!
... and now I miss the beach again. πŸ˜…

Two screenshots in a distressed rainbow-hued frame (top and bottom bar only, red to blue left to right gradient) with a black to light grey slash from upper left to bottom right, the phrase Midweek New Music Roundup atop the divider. Above the bar, the members of Korean boy group RIIZE plus backup dancers in a small urban dance studio, caught in mid-performance, dressed casually, for their pre-release single Bag Bad Back. Below the slash, soloist HyunA captured in a white tee, navy Navy sweatpants, and a navy cap, with backup dancers behind her. The captured moment has the camera angled perpendicular to the action, such that the floor is to screen left. Center bottom text reads April 30 - May 7.

GIMP monched on my previous banner template AND I was having a bear of a time with getting things to work with the previous layout anyway, so a new rainbow-fied banner! How long will it last? Who knows! I am capricious and fickle as spring weather sometimes! And other times I can't be bothered to change templates for months and years on end. 😜

Also, speaking of the weather, if it doesn't stop trying to kill me, I may have to take the week (less than three days now, sigh) off to reset. Maybe. I don't know. Things are still kinda all over the place and the rain is not helping. But neither is not being able to even try to do these reviews until Saturday, so yeah. Something something watch this space for more updates.

SO! After starting out the process with over 120 videos in the playlist, I was eventually able to drop that down to ~65, between doubles and then a batch rights transfers (which I had suspected was the situation even as I was adding the "new" 1theK batch to the playlist, but I had to be sure all of those videos were a batch transfer). What remains is a little bit of this and a lotta bit of that - dance pop and hiphop of course, but also R&B and assorted styles of rock and even some trot and surprise jazz. If soft rock and adult contemporary are your thing, JANNABI dropped a whole brick of videos in those genres. If you're looking for a dance fix, RIIZE coughed up two pre-releases, plus we've got comebacks from TRENDZ, HyunA, and more. Looking for hiphop? Tablo and RM are out to pluck your heartstrings while Young Posse show thanks for their audiences. Not sure what you're in the mood for? Feel free to run a genre search or comment with what you usually listen to and I'll try to offer some suggestions!

Banner slots this week go to RIIZE and HyunA, with additional nods from me going to TRENDZ, EPEX & joan, TXT, and NCT's Chenle. And yes, I've added a new symbol this week: πŸ”€ for tracks with English CC channels. (Yes, I know, that's not the CC symbol - did you know the usual CC infoglyph is not actually part of the common emoji set? Now you do! Ah yes, the subtle abelism in the systems...)

Jeong Dongwon - Heung! (feat. HAON)
cw: flashing lights, physical violence

I've been meaning to post this since March, but my health kept shuffling it down the schedule. Because trot is not just old people music done by and for old people. 😜

Our protagonist here is being just a bit creepy ... or is he? You'll have to watch to find out the truth! Or if you'd rather just watch Dongwon dance, there's also a Suit Dance version, with English CC, though it drops HAON's rap from the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQ7lsHrNmCk

izna - SIGN
cw: flashing, lens flares, fireworks/pyrotechnics

Includes official translation into English (and several other languages) in CC and the letterbox formatting of the video means those subs stay out of the video. I know the video's supposed to be talking to a boy, but the fanservice is strong in this video. 😜 At least the girls are allowed to use their lower registers as well?

Kwon Soonkwan - Scenes of a Moment (feat. Jongho (ATEEZ))
cw: lens flare, potential hanky warning

Jongho's voice and ballads really are a match made in heaven. He could sing the telephone book and still bring you to tears if he wanted.

A split screen in a slightly grunge/distressed frame (top and bottom bars only) in the hues of a diagonal (upper left to lower right tilt) rainbow gradient with a black slash diagonally (bottom left to upper right tilt) across the middle with the text of Midweek New Music Roundup running up the divider. To the left, four young Korean men (the members of ONEUS) in casual denim and tees, standing on a beach facing the ocean. The sand under their feet is heavily disturbed with the waterline visible to the bottom left but also several hearts and the group name carved into the damp sand at their feet. To the right/below the slash, five young Korean women (the members of FIFTY FIFTY) in matching dusky blue short cutesy sleeveless dresses and tall white socks standing on a set of red carpeted risers in a V formation, with several other people faced towards them sitting in separated seats like an audience. Bottom text reads April 23rd - 30th.

HOOBOY HOKAY SO! Yeah, it's been A Time trying to get this post to come together. Considering the listing started at over 105 videos, are we surprised? No, not really. Still having Feelings about it, but, you know, World on Fire means some weeks are worse than others. So if you're in need of a Kpop pick-me-up, well, hopefully this week you'll be in luck finding just the right thing. Or if you need a therapeutic cry, we've got some hanky warnings you can search for instead. The power is in your hands!

This week we've got multiple debuts and pre-debuts (BURVEY, UDTT, Polarix, and Chenle (NCT), just to name a few), plus comebacks ranging from the return of HIGHLIGHT (aka BEAST) to new MEOVV and LUCY. Looking for trot? This is the week for it, with nine new songs from both old hands and newer faces. Plus fresh hiphop, new jazz, and plenty of rock and R&B.

So yes, even with the overly full Mea Culpa section this week, I did eventually trim this listing down to a mere 97 new videos. Which is still a LOT, so I recommend getting a snack and/or drink before settling in to give the listing a browse. Remember, "Find..." is your friend, whether you're searching for genre tags or specific artists from the list. And if you feel lost and want suggestions, I can help with that, too!

Banner slots this week went to ONEUS and FIFTY FIFTY, with additional recommendations from me for D.O (EXO), HIGHTLIGHT, LUCY, maijin, Moon Yeonjoo, Chen (EXO), Kim Nayoung, and Chenle (NCT). Yeah, it's a lot, but I couldn't help it?

Releases for the week of April 23-30 )

The Mea Culpa Section:

xikers - BREATHE
cw: flashing, supernatural elements (dokkaebi magic), unsteady cam, guns

OT10 back to slay. After a few more watches since this first came out, it feels like the dokkaebi are still figuring out what all they can do with their powers. And making chaos along the way, because of course they are. πŸ˜…

If you're an ancient Kpop fan like Abuela is, then you'll understand why I squee-ed (and then cried) when this popped up last month. And if you aren't, well, just trust me. And grab a hanky anyway.

Min Jiwoon - If You Were the Rain (feat. Crush)
cw: stalker-y behavior

A little bit of jazzy R&B for a change of pace for this Sunday evening, with a side of (yet another) Sir Not Appearing in This MV. πŸ˜‰
(there's been a bunch of such knights/dames this season)

As an aside.... we know my health has been crap since this was added to the SotD schedule back when it was first released. In mid-March. And the only reason it wasn't pushed down even further is my switching to actively trying to post 2+ songs a day as much as I can to try to catch up. πŸ˜…

EDEN - Suffering for Love
cw: flashing, lens flares

Have I shared is before? Probably. But it's Flashback Friday and Eden is wildly under-appreciated outside of the KQ-sphere, so here it is again.

Everything about this song (melody, rhythm, lyrics, vocal style) is like Eden reached into my heart and pulled out all the things that would sink into my bones, such that I tend to get hung up on it every time I hear it. Between now 18+ "kids" (ATEEZ+xikers (+Dreamcatcher)) and being married, he hasn't made time for another solo release in some years now and that's unfortunate but understandable. I'd love to hear new music from him for himself, but I'm happy with what we get, too.

Holland - Neverland
cw: flashing, lens flares, drinking (social)

Throwing it back to 2018 and the debut release of the first publicly out gay idol, Holland, with an MV that got either censored or banned for being "too risquΓ©" despite being far less sexual than a lot of uncensored straight romances. He's always had to self-produce/self-fund as an out gay idol and doesn't hide that he's been physically assaulted even for daring to be himself in public in Seoul. He continues to release music under his own label and we love him for it. πŸ’–

To the left, a young Korean man (LEEDO of ONEUS) in a hooded sleeveless black top and jeans, sitting in a brown leather chair staring intently at the camera. To the right/below the slash, a young Korean man (Chanyeon of Big Ocean) with short black hair, wearing a light denim jacket over a black shirt and grey jeans lays sprawled on a queen-sized bed with all white linens, arms extended to his sides and legs hanging, bent, off the end of the bed. Bottom text reads April 16th - 23rd.

Yeah, it may just barely be Wednesday still by the time I finally get this posted, but still! A post going up on actual Wednesday! It's a goddamn miracle! πŸ˜†

So this week saw a lot of releases by the men of Kpop, which is great if they're your preference, but less so if you're more interested in the ladies of Kpop. Which isn't to say the ladies didn't bring it - they absolutely did, between new trot from Lee Rakyung, jazz from Luca minor, hiphop from JA!L, an OST from aespa's Winter, and then comebacks from APINK, SUNNYKEY, and CHUU - just that there were far fewer releases from the ladies this week. On the other hand, we've got some big names in male Kpop making comebacks this week with yet another MV from EXO's Kai, new music from PENOMECO, a new OST from Jeong Sewoon, and a new solo release from Lee Daehwi (AB6IX), among others.

The week starts off a bit sleepy, so if you're someone who likes to just go straight down the list, be aware of that and watch the hanky warnings. That said, I've had to flag a couple releases with elevated warnings (⚠️) this week, so please take care. And remember, you are so, so loved, especially all my fellow potatoes out there, you know who you are.

Banner artists slots this week were almost a nightmare to pick, but in the end I went with Leedo (ONEUS) and Chanyeon (BIG OCEAN), with additional highlights for me being SuperJunior-L.S.S., Kai (EXO), AXN, Han Seungwoo, SUNNYKEY, and PENOMECO (sorta).

Releases for the week of April 16-23 )

The Mea Culpa Section:
Only missing a couple tracks and I even know how I missed each of them and it may or may not happen again.

EVAN - Star Below (feat. pH-1)
cw: unsteady cam, flashing (transitions, lights), shirtless male

A more "conventional" hiphop MV - meaning I feel mostly sure it's probably not going to trigger any seizures, even with the flashing bits. With a side of pH-1 as Sir Not Appearing in This MV.

... I'm sort of making a joke with the flashing warning but going through the new releases this week and repeatedly having to tag the hiphop MVs with aggressive or higher flash warnings, including one seizure warning, it's kind of a problem. And since I try to avoid any MV I have to blanket un-recommend... hiphop sometimes gets the short end of the stick when it comes to SotD recs. I'm trying to be more mindful about posting a variety of genres, but... well, I'm trying my best.

DooBoo - Full Moon
cw: flashing/lens flares, fireworks

Running out of day, so a bit of a drop and run, but if you think the restaurant looks familiar, you're not wrong.
No, really, some day I'm going to put together a pictorial guide on Those Places - the half dozen or so locations that eveeyone in Kpop use over and over and over again - and this restaurant will indeed be on the list.

RE:WIND - FOREVER
cw: camera flashes, glitch effects, dripping wet boys (fully clothed)

Debut release from a new Kpop boy group with international members! It's a fun dance number, if a bit flashy for some eyes.

I was going to do a bonus today but then it got kinda late, oops. Tomorrow. Maybe.

Ailee - Illusion
cw: flashing

By accident (this was originally scheduled for several days ago), this is kinda the perfect song for today. Yeah, I'm having a lot of feelings today, some good, others not so much.

To the left, a young Korean man (ACE of VAV) with short black hair and off-white shirt, with white corded earbuds, standing in profile and facing an indistinct body of water. To the right/below the slash, two young women (Kik5o (left) and AleXa (right)) in long dark hair done in multiple braids, standing back to back in an industrial space, the camera tilted up to show the exposed conduits of the ceiling. Bottom text reads April 9th - 16th.

I'm blaming this on the Wee Free Kitties who have completely escaped confinement this week, much to the anxiety of the older cats who feel responsible for keeping track of them and will start yelling at me if they think the littles are getting into too much trouble. Regardless of how much trouble said kittens may or may not be actually getting into. πŸ˜…

This week was a bit slower than the last couple and leans decidedly towards the men, between the debut of SKINZ, VAV's ACE making his solo debut, and then more comebacks than you can shake a stick at in everything from pop to hiphop to R&B to trot. That said, we did get some ladies in the mix as well, from maijin to UNIS. Add in some Japanese releases from TRENDZ, SAY MY NAME, and &TEAM and you've got a full week all right. Grab a snack and review the list in whichever way makes the most sense to you!

Banner artist slots this week go to ACE of VAV (left) and Kik5o x AleXa (right), with additional picks from me going to AIMERS, maijin, Kai, XG, and NCT WISH.
