Welcome! Hi, I'm your host, resident Abuela/Ahjumma/Obaasan/Grandma and writer Yuuana (aka Selah, aka Lise) and this is my place for all things music blogging. My focus lately has been Kpop, so much of the focus at current is on Kpop, but I'm happy and eager to listen to all kinds of music. Tune in for Music Monday, Midweek Kpop Release Roundup, The Overflow, and whatever other, shorter term serials trip my trigger.

Rules of the road:
  • BE NICE! This is me sharing my thoughts on something I love, you aren't required to agree. You are expected to be nice and civil, towards me and towards others in comments.
  • Don't ask for membership. I made this comm to make my life easier, but no one else needs to be a member to access what I'll be posting here, promise.
  • If you need a content warning, please ask! Comments to this entry are screened by default, so if you need to ask me for something privately, this is the place for it. I try to keep tabs on the major/common ones (flashing lights, seasickness, violence, medical/injury/self-harm, clowns, police), but if I've missed something or you want me to track something else, let me know.

And that should cover it! So welcome and enjoy your stay!

In a distressed frame (top and bottom bars only, red to blue left to right gradient), three screenshots. Leftmost, a young Korean man in profile (Mingi of ATEEZ) wearing all black strides down an industrial/cement corridor with his hands in his pockets, facing screenright. In the center, a young Korean woman (Jihyo of TWICE) crouches beside the left rear quarter of an obscured white car, in profile but turned slightly towards the camera. Rightmost, a middle-aged Korean man (soloist RAIN) in greyscale, sits in a dark space in a leather chair, legs crossed and arms wide, his white button-down half unbuttoned and bow tie entirely untied. Title text reads Midweek New Music Roundup. Bottom text reads May 6th - 13th.

It started as a joke, but maybe I should change the schedule on these just so maybe I'll actually get them posted on time. Or, you know, even better, Life could stop kicking me while I'm down long enough for me to get things done in a timely fashion. Either or. ๐Ÿ˜œ

We've got another mix of genres again this week, hitting everything from R&B to EDM, trot to hiphop, with a handful of OSTs, a couple debuts, and some unexpected gems. If girl groups are your jam, we've got comebacks from Billlie, KIIRAS, and aespa to get you started. Looking for the freshest hiphop? Check out the latest from BE'O or Taeyong (NCT). Feeling nostalgic? We've got new music from the original hard body idol, RAIN and Jay Park is back with his latest project, LNGSHOT. Wanting something more rock? LUAMEL's in the desert while ILHOON says the devil can take a number. Not sure what you want? Peruse the list at your leisure, check out my personal picks, or hit me up for more specific recommendations!

Banner artist slots this week go to Mingi (ATEEZ), Jihyo (TWICE), and RAIN, because I have zero shame. As per usual, my weekly favorites can be found by looking for the ๐Ÿ’šs.

Seonghwa (ATEEZ) - Skin
cw: aggressive flashing, gore, supernatural elements (snake demon), Mother Mothering
CC in 10 tracks, including English

If I hadn't been feeling like crap the last many days, I would've been completely predictable and posted this on Sunday. Beware the return of Seonghwa's Tongue Antics.

There's a very limited but not completely zero chance that someday I'll get back to doing Music Mondays again and will be back to this song then, but in the mean time... Mother arrives! And takes no prisoners, as per usual.

8TURN - BRUISE
cw: aggressive flashing, lens flares
CC in English and Japanese

Fire and disaster and pain, oh my. A song with epic sweep. Or if you'd rather focus entirely on the choreo, they did this on Studio CHOOM, too: https://youtu.be/f35yPhEC_RU (cw: aggressively flashing lights)
The dancer in me is quietly impressed with this choreo, not surprised Studio CHOOM wanted this.

In a distressed rainbow-hued frame (top and bottom bar only, blue to red left to right gradient), a still from Kino's Big Hoodie music video. A young Korean man (Kino of PENTAGO) stands on a balcony of a brick residence, arms stretched wide and head back as he sings. He's wearing four hoodies layered on top of each other, three zip-up (open) and one pullover, alternating black and white Header text reads Midweek New Music Roundup. Bottom text reads April 29th - May 6th.

Considering by Friday AM, I'd still only managed to scrape together an hour-ish, I got pretty ruthless striking genslop this week. Between that, my scheduled breaks for supplementals (all skipped, sigh, my poor eyeballs/brain) and 1theK getting a big batch rights transfer, we went from 100 videos to only 44. I was also extra snarky a couple times, so a reminder that comments are my own opinion only.

This week leaned mostly R&B, so if that's your thing, you're in luck! We got a number of pre-releases this week, including from Mingi (ATEEZ) and pre-debut group H//PE PRINCESS. Also, the debut of new boy group NAZE, the solo debut of VARI of NINE.i, a half dozen OSTs, and comebacks from LUCY and SOYOU, among others. Not sure where to start? Browse the list at will, go straight down the links section, search by genre, or hit me up for ideas.

Banner artist slot this week went to KINO of PENTAGON being entirely too cute in layered hoodies. Additional favorites can be found, as usual, with ๐Ÿ’šs.

Minjae, Sumin, Yechan (xikers) - DELULU
cw: aggressive flashing/strobing lights, full face masks, f-bombs, supernatural elements (creatures, spirit fire, paper talismans)
CC in 4 tracks, incl ENG

A completely different vibe for this name-twin song from xikers' rap line. Aggressively "we go our own way" and probably also at least lore-adjacent, given the presence of spirit orbs and floating brooms.

the flashing in this is pretty aggressive throughout, so I haven't to recommend against if you're feeling particularly photosensitive.

KiiiKiii - Delulu
cw: aggressive flashing/strobing lights, surrealism

Dreamy and atmospheric and just a bit out there. But only a little bit.

The HU - Sugaan Essena (Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order)

Since it's Star Wars Day, something a little different for SotD today.
While The HU typically sing in Mongolian, this project included them collaborating with the game devs to develop an alien language to go with the new song. That feels kind of like a sea shanty, now that I think about it....

May the Force be with you!

In a distressed rainbow-hued frame (top and bottom bar only, blue to red left to right gradient), a long shot of two singers (L: Gummy, R: Seungkwan (SEVENTEEN) sitting in plain metal chairs, facing each other, in a bare industrial/warehouse space with bright light streaming in from the windows. Header text reads Midweek New Music Roundup. Bottom text reads April 22nd - 29th.

I can no longer tell if I'm doing better or worse than I was last week. I certainly feel more wrung out and stressed out than I did last week. I also spent the first half of the week completely wrong about what day it was and this is the worst time of the month for that to be happening, so yeah. We're rolling way behind. And exhausted. And in pain. And totally stressed out. It's wonderful! /s

The roundup is a bit longer this week, with JYP flooding the zone with a whole bunch of releases from their artists. We also have several OSTs, including drops from WOODZ and LUCY, several genres of rock, and the Korean debut of new boy group GENUS. The surrealism was also heavy this week, though one should expect that with the likes of Balming Tiger and NMIXX in the mix. Or if you're looking something for a winding down, Stella Kim brings out the violin and some cute kids and SF9 offered another live recording track. Not sure what you want? Browse the list or jump down to do a genre search!

Banner artists this week are GUMMY and Seungkwan (SEVENTEEN) who collab'd on a sweet spring ballad. Additional favorites (and there are many) can be found by noting the ๐Ÿ’šs.

SuperM - 100
cw: flashing, Red Force lore

In "honor" of wife telling me about a thread asking about "ideal" boy group composition. Apparently, this was my platonic ideal group and then SME's C-suite dicked around and ruined everything. Repeatedly. Including borking up the lore to the point of irrelevance. Yeah, sure, the lore was already broken, not the point!

Also, I maintain that Taemin still holds the crown for gayest cowboy hat fit, despite recent entries by Felix. ๐Ÿคฃ

Even if these members do manage to get back together again in some fashion, it still won't be SuperM, so let's agree to not go there, okay? Okay.

Two screenshots in a distressed rainbow-hued frame (top and bottom bar only, blue to red left to right gradient) with a black to light grey slash from bottom left to upper right, the phrase Midweek New Music Roundup atop the divider. Above the bar, six young Asian men (the members of NCT WISH, 2 Korean, 4 Japanese) are seen dressed in soft creams, dancing in a fantasy forest. Below the slash, a young Korean man a light grey hoodie and backwards brown ballcap (Han of Stray Kids) stands in a recording studio, left hand up on his head as he sings into a hanging microphone. Center bottom text reads April 15th - 22nd.

When I say April has been the worst month for migraine I've had in years (maybe even over the last decade plus).... I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to manage this week at all. I've been extra sensitive lately, so my warning threshold on flashing is extra low and I quit a lot more easily, even on artists I love. The warnings still have value, even the quit notices, just means you may have to read my notes for my reasonings. It does mean there's fewer elevated if only because I quit before I could fairly judge if an elevated flashing warning was appropriate (though in some cases, the flashing was SO bad, they got it anyway). And while I've gotten ruthless (and entirely too good at clocking) wholly genslop'd MVs, there's still one flag where I'm less certain and one flag for a different "other" warning.

We've got a good mix of genres again this week - rock, pop, R&B, even trot and one country-western. So whether you're looking for the freshest hiphop (we've got solo comebacks for both Taeyong (NCT) and Donghae (Super Junior) this week), something soft and fluffy (Woody is always a win there, but we've also got a slew of OSTs), or some alt rock to vent some feelings (Wheein is all of us this week), you're likely to find something new to enjoy. Browse the list in whichever way makes you happy!

Banner slots this week went to NCT Wish and Han of Stray Kids, because I am old and predictable. Additional picks can be found with ๐Ÿ’š

cw: surrealism, flashing, fireworks/pyrotechnics

Cowboy!Seonghwa is dangerous for everyone.
Yeah, this was A Choice to highlight for my birthday, but it's MY birthday and they're my number one emotional support boy band, so....
has this been featured before? Probably. Maybe not. And it's technically still eligible for a Music Monday if I ever get enough bandwidth to pick those up again, so.... ๐Ÿ˜…

1VERSE - WABIF (Wide Awake before I Fall) (Street Perfromance ver)

We miss Hyuk, but they make it work.
I'm both proud of them for doing a world tour already and a bit worried about it, seeing as the whole world is on fire. On the other hand, them and Big Ocean have crossed streams a couple of times now and it's adorable every time, so some good is coming from all of this.

SANTOS BRAVOS x &TEAM - Kawasaki (&TEAM REMIX)
cw: flashing
CC in ENG

And now for something completely different: the remix planned and planted in the original MV. It's not hugely different from the original, but I still like this version better and not just because of &TEAM contributing a verse in Japanese. It is a lyric video, so on-screen lyrics in both Spanish and Japanese.

In a distressed rainbow-hued frame (top and bottom bar only, blue to red left to right gradient), a still from Moonbyul's Hertz music video. A young Korean woman (Moonbyul of MAMAMOO) in bulk black streetwear leans over the camera, right hand stretched towards the lens. Header text reads Midweek New Music Roundup. Bottom text reads March 25th - April 1st.

It's sure been a hell of a year of a week all right. To the point where the time limit rule kicked in and I wasn't able to finish reviewing everything on the list. It's clearly marked where I left off, so you'll know it when you get to it. And I did make it through most of the very long process. Enough to pick out some favorites, both expected and unexpected. Still, it's been a long, horrible day after a week of long and largely horrible days, so I don't have my usual wits about me, sorry not sorry.

Went with a simplified banner this week, so the only featured artist is MAMAMOO's Moonbyul, though you can find my other favorites on the list by keeping an eye out for a ๐Ÿ’š. There weren't as many as there have been in some other weeks, but c'e la vie~!

CLOSE YOUR EYES - X
cw: aggressive flashing, surrealism
CC in 6 tracks, incl ENG

A couple months later, a baby group brings the same title but a very different energy. The clipping is giving me gaming flashbacks. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคฃ

Occasionally I'll have flights of fancy that the original title was X X X until someone pointed out that was a Very Bad Idea.
I have nothing to support this notion, mind you, but it amuses me nonetheless.

Two screenshots in a distressed rainbow-hued frame (top and bottom bar only, red to blue left to right gradient) with a black to light grey slash from upper left to bottom right, the phrase Midweek New Music Roundup atop the divider. Above the bar, a young blonde Korean woman (YUNA of ITZY) in a pale cream fur coat standing in front of a freezer of ice creams. Below the slash, the seven members of BTS stand on the forequarter of a sailing ship, dressed in dark, vaguely naval-uniform style. Center bottom text reads March 18th - 25th.

It's hot, it's cold, it's turn on the A/C time, no wait, switch back to heat, no A/C, no heated blanket ... yeah, the weather's drunk and my body is big mad and dying about it, so count it a miracle I actually made it all the way through this list instead of going Here Be Dragons. I did get a bit ruthless a couple times with my cuts, but my list, my rules. Doesn't stop us from having everything from hiphop and EDM to alt rock and trot, with plenty of pop and R&B along the way. New OSTs from Soobin of TXT and Narin of MEOVV, the much-anticipated return of BTS, a surprise drop from the rappers of xikers, new girl rock from LATENCY, a rap collab from H1GHER Music, plus supplemental releases by P1Harmony, WOODZ, and Bang Yedam to round things out a bit. Not sure where to start? Whether you go straight down the list or hunt and peck, it's up to you! When in doubt, a ctrl+F by genre is always a place to start.

Banner slots this week went to YUNA (ITZY) and BTS for image reasons - actual favorites are, as usual, marked with a heart (even when they hurt me). ๐Ÿ’š

Flashing back to 2003 thanks to It's Live featuring Bang Yedam doing a cover as a tribute to the late Wheesung, aka Realslow.

I don't remember who's rapping for him here, other than it's not Teddy or Taebin. Masta Wu, maybe? Trying remember who else was on YG at the time, but it's been a hot minute (20+ years)

Above the bar, four young Korean men (the members of AB6IX) are seen in reflection in a large circular mirror, dressed casually in soft sweaters. Below the slash, a young Korean man with pastle pink hair (Hoshi of SEVENTEEN) stands in an industrial space, holding a paper-wrapped bouquet of mixed mums while others clap, various deco shapes flying through the air around him. Center bottom text reads March 11th - 18th.

Thursday still counts as midweek, dangnabit. Especially when I ended up having to do most of this review on Wednesday due to Life Stuff. This week was something of a struggle in more ways than one. I've said it before, I'll say it again, but I'm really sick of seeing genslop in these videos (though there's one where the flag isn't for genslop) and I'm about to throw the banhammer at a couple more artists if they won't stop it.

That aside ... despite the length of the listing, this was a fairly short week. Much of the listing was more chore than joy, unfortunately for me. Maybe you'll fair better? It is also very much weighted towards the men in the room, hence the double male banner. That said, they managed to hit most of the big subgenres - EDM, various types of rock, R&B, dance pop, hiphop, even jazz. Browse the listing in which ever way makes the most sense to you or alt-F your way through your favorite genre type~

Banner artist slots this week went to AB6IX and Hoshi (SEVENTEEN), with additional (few) picks marked with green hearts.
